Lethbridge Legal Guidance provides free legal aid, information and advocacy to people in financial difficulty who need legal services and representation and are not eligible for legal aid. Lawyer Placement Service The Lawyer Placement Service provides you with contact information for up to three lawyers who will consider which legal services may be able to help you. If you talk to each lawyer, the first half hour of the conversation is free. You shouldn`t expect the lawyer to do freelance work during this time – this is to discuss your legal situation and explore your options. Here`s what one woman who attended our legal clinics said: The Calgary Women`s Centre is an ongoing source of information, support and advocacy. The centre provides women with quick access to emergency food, personal hygiene products and bus tickets. It provides recommendations to other organizations in the areas of food, clothing, furniture, housing, health, employment, education and recreation. The centre runs a legal aid clinic where volunteer lawyers provide free half-hour legal counselling sessions to women. The clinic aims to provide women with the preliminary information and support they need to access the justice system. Family law and other types of law are discussed, but not criminal law.
Our legal clinics would not be possible without our volunteer lawyers who dedicate their time to supporting women in their legal concerns. Not to mention our amazing partners, including the Alberta Law Foundation, which has supported our program for over 10 years! We are also very grateful to our community organizations such as Calgary Legal Guidance, the Elizabeth Fry Society, the Law Society of Alberta and Pro-Bono Alberta, who continue to ensure that women have access to much-needed legal advice and resources. Law Society of Alberta The Law Society of Alberta regulates the legal profession in the public interest by promoting and enforcing high standards of professional and ethical conduct on the part of Alberta lawyers. The Law Society can help members of the public find a lawyer, search for records and wills, and answer questions about lawyers` conduct. All the lawyers who advise in our legal clinics are women. These lawyers volunteer for the Women`s Centre to ensure that more women have access to legal advice, regardless of their economic status. These advocates strive to provide women with the information and options they request so that women feel empowered and in control of their situation. “The volunteer lawyer really encouraged me and gave me a positive conversation in addition to her legal advice.
