The .375 Winchester, .444 Marlin and .45-70 Govt. were an option for hunters with handguns. As they were authorized before 2017, these calibers became grandfathers. 45-70 is such a good weapon, I shot my first bear with it. It`s hard to believe that such a large caliber would ruin so little meat. It is very important to send an email to the Iowa DNR to let them know that this is unacceptable! This is BS that the Regs allowed .45-70 and now they are trying to pull out. My friend bought the same pistol last year because they had recently allowed rifles with straight cartridges and .45-70 was explicitly called ALLOWED in the Regs book.

Now they want to take back some of those cartridges and become people who have invested in new deer rifles. It is completely unfair to allow certain cartridges and withdraw them two years later. The law allows the use of straight-walled ammunition, which was previously approved for pistol hunting, in rifles. The list of authorized calibers can be found in the Iowa Hunting and Trapping Regulations. 31, www.iowadnr.gov/hunting) and the criteria for ammunition of similar size not included in the list. Will the legislation come into effect for the 2017 deer hunting season? Yes, it will be an option as a legal method. During the public comment phase, seven written comments were received. Five commenters supported the proposed changes to allow deer hunting (including .45-70 and .444 calibres). The other two commentators objected to the use of large-calibre rifles and “disconnected” cartridges. If you live in Iowa, I`d think twice, they`d try to ban this cycle. Do I need a special permit to use my rifle? No special permit is required, but a hunter must have the required Iowa hunting license, habitat fee, and deer tag.

Iowa hunters will have a new option this fall while hunting deer during youth season, disabled hunter season, and both shotgun seasons — rifles capable of firing straight-walled cartridges. The new law requires those caught with a rifle capable of firing ammunition that is not on the approved list during the deer hunt to suspend their hunting privileges for two years and be fined $250. What is an expansion chip? Expansive bullets, also known as hollow-point bullets, are designed to expand or grow on impact compared to regular bullets or all-metal ammunition. Normal spheres, especially those moving at very high speeds, tend to penetrate targets with minimal effect. This scheme was adopted by the Commission on 8 April 2021. 40° altitude is great beach time here! Haha thanks! I have been hunting with the same weapon for about 10 years. I call it my “old loyalty,” it has made me more deer than any other weapon I own. (Which I don`t currently own because they were all lost in a boating accident last year) I have a Marlin 1895GBL. If I had to give up all but one of my weapons, I would keep them. Right-walled right-walled straight-walled cartridges for use with handguns with projectiles from 0.357″ to 0.500″ in diameter and a case length from 0.850″ to 1,800″ What is allowed? The following cartridges can now be used in rifles for deer hunting in Iowa.

Is there a log restriction? No, not this year, but hunters should pay attention to possible changes to this requirement in the coming years. Looks like you`re all having a great time on the beach. Beautiful deer and beautiful rifle. Can I use it for turkey or just deer? No, this is only allowed to hunt deer. Is this new? The size of the calibre of the projectile has been allowed since 1997 for handguns intended for deer hunting. What has changed is that the type of weapon allowed to fire the bullet has been expanded to include rifles. Please email them about it! I sent them emails about it and the dog training record, which they are also trying to add restrictions. Your email is downstairs, I think.

Iowa`s DNR is the greediest of any state I`ve seen. It seems that all they want is money, ridiculous. I agree with a lot of the things they do, but throughout my life, they seem to get more greedy every year. The Notice of Intent to Make this Rule was published in the Iowa Administrative Bulletin as ARC 5435C on February 10, 2021. A virtual public hearing took place on 2 March 2021 at 12:00. No one attended the public hearing. I love him! I got the 18″ gun and mounted a Vortex Crossfire 2×7 on it and all together is the perfect size and weight in my opinion. The leverage also gives it a very pleasant classic feel when hunting and I like that. Plus, it`s just fun to shoot, even if you`re just practicing the target.

Editor`s note: For replacement pages for IAC, see IAC Supplement 5/5/21. What makes a straight-walled cartridge? The entire length of the case has the same diameter as the ball. It`s such a fun weapon and a perfect size and power to grow in Iowa. Can I use a rifle during the late muzzle loading season? No, only the shotgun season, the youth season and the disabled hunter season. Is this a new season? No, it is simply an option for the method of taking during the existing seasons for young, disabled hunters and both seasons of shotgun. My rifle does not meet the requirements, can I get an exemption? No, there are no derogations. In addition, the new law provides for harsher penalties for those caught with a rifle capable of firing ammunition that is not on the approved list during deer hunting. These include the suspension of their hunting privileges for two years and a fine of $250. Where and when can it be used? Straight-sided cartridges can be used in rifles nationwide during youth, disability and both seasons of shotguns You`re right! It`s a beauty. Deer also not too shabby.

The law was enacted to allow older and younger hunters a lower recoil option, but it is available to all hunters during these four seasons.
